post/ discussion:

There are many reasons that motivate me to pursue my career as a social worker, one of them being for social justice. Everyday we experience a type of discrimination whether its racism, ageism, ableism, or sexism. This week's readings were informative and educational and the one article that stood out to me was "Recognizing Ableist Beliefs and Practices and Taking Action as an Ally". It discusses how individuals with disabilities are discriminated against and provides a chart on supportive behavior and actions. The following quote from the passage is what motivates me to work for social justice. Castaneda, Hopkins, & McCants (2013) stated "it is vitally important that we begin to question the historical and contemporary patterns and practices that reproduce the discrimination and exclusion of people with intellectual, emotional, and physical abilities" (p.529). This quotation is motivating to me because discrimination is taught whether it's through family, friends, other individuals who have an impact of a person's life, social media or institutional. Identifying the root cause of discrimination and targeting them can gradually work towards changing people's views on others and realize in the end despite our color, disability, religion, or sex, we all have on goal in common and it's to enjoy the life we have and live it to the fullest. Disabilities need to be seen as the norm whether it's in the individual, institutional, or cultural aspect. The more people see these individuals in the work environment and social media can help them realize they are people with goals and living life to their fullest despite the disability they have. As social workers we need to advocate for businesses and the community to have the accommodation that is needed for people with disabilities. Helping them feel comfortable in their own community can give them empowerment and give them the confidence they need to step out of their homes and enjoy the community whether it's going to the park or participating in events. Another important aspect is advocating for the care givers of individuals with disabilities and providing them with the resources that are available to them to better assist them. Together we can make a difference through even the smallest change we feel might not be significant enough.
