Discussion 3.1: EMDR or Motivational Interviewing Therapy Critique

Communication skills (What skills were predominantly used in this session? Were these appropriate to the timing and issues being discussed?)

For part-b, I will be addressing questions 2 and 8. The main skills used in this session were open-ended questions, reflection, and positive feedback. I thought the clinician did a great job of addressing a sensitive topic but allowing her patient to really explain. I also really like how the provider guided the conversation and offered positive affirmation. When she asked the patient to rate her confidence, she asked about what was helping rather than barriers. She even highlighted the fact that she had done it before. In my mind, these reinforced the idea that this goal was obtainable. In general, questions were asked, but it was free from judgement and overall supportive (Micol et al., 2021).

Evaluation (Summarize your experience of the therapy session observed. What was your greatest learning from this video?)

Smoking cessation is something many patients struggle with, and we will be counseling on frequently in practice. The arguments here were valid on both sides, but the agreed goal was to quit smoking. I really liked how this interaction went, and I feel it was persuasive or empowering. My greatest learning from this was how to approach issues positively, helping patients see things differently. In the end, the choice was still the patients, but a seed was planted, and the result could be behavior change. I think motivational interviewing could be a powerful tool to promote health (Wheeler, 2020)
