I need help structuring my Book Review on the book Hawaiis Story by Hawaiis Queen by Liliuokalani my over all point of view is that "Queen Liliuokalani's book provides a firsthand perspective not only on the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy but also on Hawaii's society at the time, including family dynamics and relationships among the ali'i (nobility). It offers insightful descriptions of the broader context of Hawaii during this period. Her purpose was to set the record straight and leave a legacy for her people to continue their fight. The narrative gives a thoughtful and detailed account of the conspirators' actions, demonstrating her sharp intellect and deep awareness of the political machinations within the kingdom. She makes it clear that she was fully aware of everything transpiring around her." and this is the guidelines for the review ---

BOOK REVIEW ASSIGNMENT SHEET (300-400 level)

This is aREVIEWnot a report. Do not simply provide a summary, but provide your own analysis of the book. Focus in on one or two things about the reading that piqued your interest, raised questions, etc, and use those as a jumping off point for ANALYZING the text. You should provide, at most, one short paragraph of summary; the rest should be analysis of the book itself and how it can be used both to tell history or as a part of history itself. This does not, however, mean that you cannot provide support for your argument with more in depth discussions of certain sections of the text.

You are allowed a bit more leeway than a formal paper (personal response, reflection, etc) but these responses must still demonstrate not only that you have done the reading but also that you have THOUGHT about what you read and understand the readings.

  • Ex: What message about the past is the writer trying to tell us about the past?
  • Ex: What does the book tell us about how people saw the world in the era when i was written?
  • Ex: Problems or weaknesses in the text.Ex: Questions raised by the texts.Ex: Ways the arguments or information from the book might be applied in other ways.
  • As part of this you should do some quick research on the book's author(s), and how their identity might affect the book's portrayals as well.

YOU SHOULD HAVE A THESIS STATEMENT. You should be making some sort of argument in this thing, either about what the book did well, what it missed, what its most important themes are, etc. Your analysis of the book should support the thesis.

At the end of the day, it is a review. So the most important things are who would benefit from or enjoy reading this book and why, and who would not.

FORMATTING:

Minimum 900 words (Approx 3 pages, Double-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman, 1" margins)

You will pass or fail depending on four things

  1. Did you complete the minimum standards for length, etc?
  2. Is the writing clear enough for me to understand?
  3. Do you make an argument?
  4. Do you support the argument with things from the book?
