Question:
I need help understanding this equation: C=e0A/d where e0 is thepermittivity of free space constant, A is area of the capacitorplates, and d is the distance between them. In my problem, I wasgiven the capacitance, the voltage, the distance between theplates, the dielectric constant K, and I was asked to find the areaof the plates. My book tells me that the equation you use to findthe area is A=Cd/Ke0. This confuses me. I thought the capacitancethey gave me was the capacitance without considering thedielectric, and to find the true capacitance, you would have tomultiply the given C by K, and then solve for the area with thenew, much larger, capacitance. (The equation for C is K times C0,where C0 is the capacitance in a vacuum). But that wasn't right. Ifyou do that, you end up with this equation for the area-->A=CKd/e0. The K is on top instead of the bottom. What do you think?I think its possible the capacitance they gave me actually alreadytook the K into account, and what you're supposed to do is dividethe K out to obtain the capacitance as if it were in a vaccum withno dielectric. So does this equation C=e0A/d only apply tocapacitances in a vacuum, without the dielectric?
