here's my transcript 12:46:27 Yes. 12:46:28 Okay, I'm gonna start recording right now. 12:46:32 Hi, my name is Wanisha Abrams. I am a counselor and trainee, and today I'm going to be going over an interview with you. Is it okay if I record this? 12:46:44 Yeah, that's fine. 12:46:42 Have your consent to report this meeting. Perfect! First, I want to say congratulations on finishing middle school. That's a huge accomplishment, and now you're stepping into a new, exciting chapter, which is high school. 12:46:56 My job is to support you in the transition, whether it's getting used to your new schedule, keeping up with your classes, managing, um. 12:47:05 Your time, or even navigating the school and just learning, um, where the resources are, and just staying on track. 12:47:14 This year is all about discovering what works best for you. 12:47:12 Awesome. 12:47:18 Um, what... what building skills that can help you navigate in high school? Um, we're gonna talk a little bit about your hobbies, what do you like, some of the things you dislike, and also, um, we're gonna talk about how I can help you in every step of the way, and just to make your journey in high school very well, and also a happy journey. Um, that's my goal as a school counselor, is to make sure you're happy. 12:47:43 In high school, and is there anything that I can do to help you? 12:47:46 Get over that accomplishment and fix anything that you might be having trouble with. 12:47:54 Yeah, that sounds really good. 12:47:51 Does that sound? Sound really good? Thursday afternoon. Okay, okay, perfect. Um, so my first question is, um, let's talk about your goal. 12:48:01 How can I help support you in earning the A's in your schools? 12:48:06 How can I better assist you as a counselor, um, when it comes to academics, making sure that you're on track with your grades and earning the... whether it's A's or B's? 12:48:16 My desert's nice. I've seen... I believe it's helpful. 12:48:16 So, um, right now, I have a big load with being on the basketball team. 12:48:22 Oh, wow, okay. So that'll be a hop. 12:48:23 And... yeah. And so, I feel like... I feel like I'm doing pretty okay anyways, right now, I have A's and B's. My mom wants me to get all A's, but... having the full schedule of Being on the basketball team. 12:48:32 Look for ABC. The weekend? That's right. 12:48:41 Definitely has its struggles, but I think A's MBs are okay. 12:48:45 Oh, wow, I love basketball. Basketball is something that I used to play when I was in high school. 12:48:50 Um, I learned a lot about JV, and also varsity, so I'm really good when it comes to basketball. 12:48:56 It definitely will keep you, um, well with the academics, and give you something to do outside of just, um, being in the classroom. 12:49:03 So that's something that's really great. I wanted to ask, what motivates you to do your back? 12:49:10 You're worthy. Yes. 12:49:09 What motivates me to be my best? Um, I think basketball is the main thing. 12:49:17 Um, because without getting good grades, I can't play basketball. Uh, especially for the high school team. 12:49:25 Yeah, I don't believe this. 12:49:33 I'm not registered. 12:49:25 And I really want to play basketball in college, hopefully. But I... I don't know really much steps how to get there, because I don't... I've never had other family members play sports in college. 12:49:40 Wow, okay, okay, that sounds about right. Um, my second question would be, is there anything you wish your teachers knew about you when it comes to how you learn best. 12:49:49 Rather you learn best with audio, you're more a visual person, do you think you wish your teachers would know a little bit more about you? That would have probably helped you when it comes to academics? 12:50:02 Um, so... I'm a really visual learner. 12:50:07 So if... if teachers knew that... Most of my teachers do pretty good and have, like. 12:50:08 Oh, wow, me too. 12:50:20 And not only were lost. 12:50:13 Good PowerPoints and, like, lecture... type of things that help um... with the visual component of it, but I... I do have my math class after... lunch, so that it's a little hard... it's a little hard to stay focused after lunch, having to deal with math, because math is not my favorite. 12:50:26 Absolutely. 12:50:32 Yeah, it's mine too, so I would say math should have been the first class, because a lot of students like to get math out the way. 12:50:38 Um, because after lunch, it becomes really terrible. Um, you get sleepy, you're not really interested, so I, I totally understand, and I agree with you. 12:50:45 Um, so just making sure your student... your teacher knows that you are a visual learner, that what That will help you. So I would note that down. 12:50:54 Um, my next question is this... Crocodile focus, um, their focus. 12:51:00 What usually distracts you, or get in the way when you're trying to do your best? 12:51:03 Is there, like, um, like, your phone or electronics, whether it's the computer or tablet, anything that distracts you from doing your best in the classroom? 12:51:12 Is there something that you'd like to mention, or you think you can remove in order to become your best this semester in high school? 12:51:21 Um, I think my phone and social media distracts me just a little bit. 12:51:27 Um, for the most part, my... mom has me on lockdown mode when it comes to social media. 12:51:34 I'm gonna... 12:51:35 But because I have practice right after school. Um, I don't get home till... kind of late, and I normally want to, like, chill before I actually have to go to bed. 12:51:43 I don't know for sure. Absolutely. 12:51:47 And that's... 12:51:46 So... So I guess I need to get rid of the phone a little bit, because I stay up later than normal, because I just want to browse TikTok. 12:51:55 Yeah, and that's totally fine. I was gonna say, a lot of high schoolers, um, they do have a lot of problems with social media, and just being on their phones, so you're not alone. 12:52:03 Um, I would say just try to limit your time on social media, and when you're in the classroom, just try to not even bring your phone. 12:52:11 Um, for the day, or just leave it at home, and when you get home, just get on TikTok. 12:52:15 Um, is other resources that would probably help you out. A lot of high schools have the same problem, um, it's just... making sure you're not on the phone during class. 12:52:24 Um, I was... wanted to ask, what strategies have helped you stay focused in the past? 12:52:23 Yeah. 12:52:29 Um, whether it's, like, writing down your notes, or just... Study time for 5 minutes, or just taking a nap for 5 minutes, putting your hair down. What are some strategies that you learn about yourself that help you work best? 12:52:42 Um, so I do have an academic planner. So... so that helps me a lot, but... I feel like I don't know how to use it very well. 12:52:51 Uh-huh. 12:52:51 So, um, I know I, like, write my homework in it, but I feel like other students are using it more than just putting homework in it. 12:53:00 Mm-hmm. 12:53:00 So, if you have resources on how to use the academic planner better than how I'm using it, that would be great, because I've... I see... I see the importance of an academic planner, but I just... I don't use it very well, or I don't think I do. 12:53:18 Mm-hmm. 12:53:16 Oh, wow, really? Okay, um, so my next question... will be... let's talk about challenges. Which class has made you wonder if this is the class for you? 12:53:30 Whether it was math, I know you did mention about you're not the best in math when it comes to afternoon time. 12:53:35 And that is so normal for high schoolers, um, math is not anyone's favorite subject. I don't think so. Not mine. 12:53:42 Um, so what... what... besides math, is there any other classes that you're struggling, and you think that subject might... might need a little bit more additional help? You don't need to roll with the board. 12:53:54 What's the name from the world is important? 12:53:53 Um, maybe, uh, my biology class? I do like science, it's more interesting than math, but... I feel like maybe if you had resources or, like. 12:54:05 You have tutors that could help me in biology, that would be great, because it kind of grosses me out, some of the things we learn about. 12:54:13 Okay, um, and then my next question is balancing school energy. 12:54:18 Extra curriculum activities. Um, I want to just ask What does a typical day look like for you? 12:54:25 From waking up and getting dressed, coming to school, what is a typical day? 12:54:31 So, my typical day, I wake... up... so school starts at 8.15, so I wake up about 6.45... between 6.45 and 7. I try to wake up at 6.45, but normally I don't wake up till closer to 7. 12:54:37 If... 12:54:46 And then I get... get ready for the day, I have breakfast, and then... Um, my mom takes me to school. 12:54:54 About 7.45. So I could go hang out with friends for a little bit before I have to go to class? 12:54:54 But... Mm-hmm. 12:55:02 And then I have school. Until about 3.30, and then I go straight to basketball. 12:55:05 You're paying licensed. Approximately. 12:55:08 So, there's not really any wiggle room to, like, socialize with any of my friends. 12:55:13 The only time I really socialize with them right now is during lunchtime. 12:55:17 Okay, I was gonna ask, do you think you have enough time for rest? 12:55:23 Um, do you think you balance enough time to get rest, and also to focus on school, and also, um on time, hanging with friends, basketball. 12:55:33 Do you think we have enough time? 12:55:36 Um, during the school days, no, I don't think I have enough time. 12:55:41 Um, because I'm super tired by the time I get home. 12:55:45 But, um, every once in a while over the weekends, I hang out with my friends. 12:55:49 It's just basketball season's really busy right now, but... Basketball season only lasts a couple months, so hopefully I get a little bit of a break after basketball to hang out. 12:55:57 Awesome. Yeah, I think, I think so, I think so. As long as you have that time where you balance school. 12:56:02 Having fun, and also, um, focusing on academics is making sure you do have, you know, your mental health time, and just relax and rewind. That's more important. 12:56:12 Um, my next question is, when you feel overwhelmed, what do you usually do, and who do you turn to for support? 12:56:18 When it's... everything is coming at you, and you feel like, oh my god, I am so drained. 12:56:23 Who do you go to for support? And what are some things that you do? 12:56:28 Um, the main per... the main person I go to support for things like that is my mom. 12:56:33 I mean, I... I don't tell her everything, but, um... For the most part, I think I have a pretty good relationship with my mom. 12:56:34 Okay. Yes. 12:56:42 Okay, do you... do you... feel comfortable reaching out to any counselors at your school, or just talking to, like, a mentor or a teacher, and just confiding in some of the things that you're going through. 12:56:54 Um, academic-wise, or even in the basketball team, or just having some problems, whether it's outside of school, um, do you feel comfortable talking to, like, mentors or teachers, or do you have any, um, adults Will you, um, besides your mom, who you want to sit and just, um, vent to? 12:57:10 Um, can I vent to you? 12:57:12 Absolutely, absolutely. So, I'm always open, um, to have conversations and just listen, and just to guide you in that support area. Um, that's... that's my job, and that's also why I'm here is to make sure you succeed in high school, and making sure that I can help you in any way that I could with... as far as, like, resources, and give you that comfort and that calm area. 12:57:33 For you to actually, um, vent to me, and to share your problem, so that way I can navigate you in the right way. 12:57:38 Okay, I think... I think I'll come and talk to you, because I like talking to you. 12:57:38 Thanks, Jamie. Um, so my last question would be... Do you feel like your teachers and counselors really understand your goals and what's important to you? And also your coaches? 12:57:52 Do you think they understand, like. For example, I noticed you said you wanted to play basketball outside of, um, high school, going into college. 12:58:00 Do you unders... do you think they understand that that's your goal, and that's what you're aiming for, um, academic-wise, and also just career-wise as well? 12:58:09 Um, you're actually the first person that I talked... to about wanting to play basketball and pursue it after high school? 12:58:17 Okay. 12:58:17 So, I guess I could be more open about it? To other people, just to know... where my mind is headed, even though I'm only in 9th grade. 12:58:24 Now... Okay, and then I wanted to ask, is there anything you wish you understood more about basketball, and also your academics? 12:58:39 Now, when you face calling. 12:58:44 Okay. 12:58:37 Um, maybe the steps on how to get to playing basketball in college, because I know there's a bunch of, like, different tests and stuff like that that you might have to take, and exit exam, like, I... I'm only a freshman, so I'm not 100% sure how to get there. 12:58:56 Yeah, and I was gonna ask, have you been resourcing colleges and seeing who has the best basketball team, or who has the perfect, um, setting that you would like to go, as far as, like, junior college, or whether it's a four-year college? 12:59:08 Have you, um, thought about any colleges or any direction where you would like to go? 12:59:17 Okay. Um. 12:59:14 Um, I've just Google searched different colleges. Um, for the most part, if... if you had any resources that could help me better narrow it down, because I also want to... maybe possibly do computer engineering or sports management as, like, a major 12:59:34 As my focus? 12:59:32 Yeah, well, it's funny. Absolutely, so I know! A few, um, junior colleges as well as regular four-year universities that does have a lot of sports management. 12:59:42 And also a really great basketball team. I know UCNME has one, UXC... And also, um, Cal State Long Beach, Northridge. So it's a lot of resources out there. I would love to share them with you, and just show you 12:59:53 Some of the programs that they have, and they offer some of the background about their schools, and also their, um. 12:59:59 Basketball team, and just to see if that's something that she might be interested in, and, um, going towards after high school. And I think it would help you and benefit you in so many ways. Um, those schools are really good, very nice, and I think that you will benefit playing basketball in college. 13:00:18 Yes. Yeah. 13:00:15 Yeah. Um, I... I have a question for you. Um, do you talk to a lot of freshmen about college, or, like, you may... you don't bring up college till, like, their junior year? 13:00:24 Can you stop for a minute. Um, I actually do. I love researching different colleges, and I just like to get to know them first, and then once they tell me their hobbies and what they like and dislike. 13:00:35 Um, then I can match them up with the perfect college. I think that they would benefit from. Um, I know you said basketball in your... in your area, so I know that UCLA has a very amazing basketball team, and they have very good sports management. 13:00:48 Systems there, so I would... if I were to match you with a college who will be UCLA, so I would have to guide you on... some of the things they look for when it comes to applying, and, you know, the background about the school. Um, so I do talk to a lot of freshmen about, um, where they might attend college, and what area they might go, because some, like junior colleges that are just four-year. 13:01:08 Um, so it's just a lot about what type of student I'm dealing with, and also your hobbies, and your background, and where you come from. 13:01:14 Um, and where you're looking to go in the future. So I do ask a lot of those questions. Um, that way I can match you up with the perfect college. 13:01:23 Do you have any more questions for him? 13:01:22 Okay. That... that's good to know. Um, no. It looks like the lunch bill might ring, so it's okay if I go to lunch, or do... do you still want to talk? 13:01:34 Oh, no, no, no, I just wanted to, um, just to introduce myself, and to really, just to get to know you a little bit more. Um, I thank you so much for sharing all the time with me, and your honesty is important, and it helps me know how I can better assist you as a counselor, and how I can make sure you're transitioning to high school. 13:01:51 Is a big step, and also guiding you in that area so you can succeed. 13:01:56 And I'm here to check in with you, and together, I think we can work on something amazing that would benefit you in high school and also in college, so I'm super excited for you. 13:02:06 I welcome you to high school, and I know you're gonna do really, really good, and just listening to your hobbies and your background. 13:02:12 I'm super excited for you, and I know that, um, I can put a plan in place to make sure you succeed. 13:02:19 And... and cars, and also in high school. Thank you so much! 13:02:21 Okay. Okay. Yep, thank you. I'm gonna go get lunch now. 13:02:26 Nice? Over? Okay, have a good day.
