In March 2015, Tim Cook (Cook), the CEO of technology giant, Apple Inc. (Apple), was named as the worlds greatest leader by Fortune magazine.4 Apple, a US-based company, designed, manufactured, and marketed mobile communication and media devices, personal computers, and portable digital music players, and sold a variety of related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications. Despite being regularly compared with the legendary founder CEO, Steve Jobs (Jobs), Cook had his own strengths. Since becoming the CEO, Cook had transformed himself from a soft-spoken operations manager to a high-profile leader at Apple. After replacing Jobs, he not only led the company to even greater financial success, but also changed the culture of the company along the way. Apple grew to become the worlds most valuable company after Cook took the helm. His emphasis on the existing strengths of the organization, his belief in consensus building among leading executives, and his lack of interest in micromanagement indicated a democratic management style. Moreover, his leadership qualities including focus on core products, long-term orientation, transparency, advocacy of human rights, and sustainable development made him an example for future business leaders. Cook also took an interest in philanthropy and had plans to give away all his wealth, after providing for the college education of his 10-year-old nephew. As of March 2015, Cooks net worth was about $120 million along with restricted stock worth $665 million if it were to be fully vested.5 While he had already started donating money, he wanted to develop a systematic approach toward philanthropy. Under him, Apple was also gradually shedding its image of a sustainability laggard. Nevertheless, Cook also faced a number of management challenges including the disappointment with some of new products like Apple Maps, the fallout with GT Advanced Technologies, and the hiring fiasco of John Browett (Browett) as Apples retail chief. Analysts opined that Apple was indeed different under Cook, but it was yet to be seen whether he would be able to turn Apple into a tech powerhouse. Industry experts observed that the fact that Cook had filled in for Jobs thrice during his medical leave of absence proved that Jobs had a lot of faith in him. Jobs had told Cook that while leading Apple, he should never ask himself What would Steve Jobs do? Instead, he should take decisions thinking of Apple as his own company. In an internal email, Cook declared that he would stay true to the unique culture of Apple. I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apples unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to thatit is in our DNA,43 said Cook. Cook not only managed to protect Apples unique culture but also added value wherever he could. While Jobs had created a distinct corporate culture for Apple and guarded it for decades, Cook was credited with gradually modifying it with his unique perspectives, and ingeniously redefining Apples image. Analysts also applauded Cook for not trying to fix everything in the company after taking over as the CEO. Apple already had a distinctive brand image, innovative products, a unique culture, and a flat management structure. Instead of changing things in the company that were right, Cook realized that whatever Apple had achieved was because of its products and its focus on customers. Cook followed Jobs style while launching new products. For instance, his keynote presentation had a number of videos to inspire the public to buy Apples products. However, his leadership style and management approach were totally different from that of Jobs. His way of running the leading innovative company set an example for business executives and leaders. According to his former colleagues at both Compaq and Apple, Cook was a complete workaholic. He would get up at 4:30am, spend an hour or so in the gym, and be ready for work by six.
