Assignment 4
My Literary Analysis
The protagonist Celie in Alice Walker's The Color Purple experiences a significant transformation in her self view and learns how to stand up for mistreatment, she was sexual abuse during her childhood by her father and also got 2 kids by him by her father took the children and belived that he killed them.. The major of this article is that Celie comes to recognize her own worth, go against social norms, and stand up for herself as a result of her relationships with other people.
Celie first get an appreciation for herself through her friendship with Shug Avery. Celie feels unworthy , and her husband and stepfather made fun of her at the beginning of the book. Shug, though, has a different self image due to her love and respect for Celie. Celie feels powerful and confident in herself when Shug performs "Miss Celie's Blues" to her. With the help of Shug's assistance Celie discovers that she is worthy of respect and love, which leads her to recognize the beauty and strength that is within herself.
Celie's relationship with Sofia challenges society expectations for women and changes Celie's self image. Sofia is an independent woman but also tough and who doesn't do what others tell her to do. Celie is motivated to act almost the same way as her after witnessing Sofia confront Mr. (Albert) and refuse to allow him to mistreat her. Celie learns from Sofia that she can be independent and determined, which is empowering her to speak up for herself and demand respect in her own relationships.
Through their agreement , Celie keeps a close relationship with her sister Nettie and discovers the value of having other women stand by her side. Despite their distance, Nettie's unwavering support and affection for Celie gives her a sense of community and caring for others. The letters she has serve as a reminder to Celie that her family loves her unconditionally and that she is not alone in her problems. Celie's relationship with Nettie gives her the willpower to never ever give up on her own independence and pleasure.
With all the support of other women, Celie experiences a transformation in The Color Purple, discovering her voice and value. She learns the ability to accept her identity and challenge the social conventions via these partnerships. The novel illustrates the power of love and support in hard times and underlines the importance of relationships in forming a person's sense of self. In the end, The Color Purple is a captivating story about resilience, empowerment, and personal development. It shows how the woman was worthless and more like an tool for the man to use.

Some advice when you will write the entire analysis in your final assignment.
- Try to keep the PEE chain in mind for the three arguments so you develop the final E, the interpretation part where you can refer to similar situations that may be current or belong to the past. The important thing is that it will reveal your analytical skills where you can compare the message in the book to things you already know and draw conclusions.
- Keep linking words in mind so you begin every new paragraph with a linking word :)
Once you have your thesis, you can use this to devise several key ideas to explore in your paragraphs. Your essay should then consist of an introductory paragraph that briefly explains the plot, the main character/s and your thesis, followed by 3 or 4 body paragraphs that explore different ideas related to your thesis, and then a conclusion to summarise your main ideas and finish off your argument.
The paragraphs should explore different arguments relating to the thesis using quotations from the text to support and expand each argument. Finally, you wrap up with a conclusion that summarises your arguments (and not the plot) and returns to the thesis you began with. Each of the three argumentative paragraphs should include the following structure:
P = Point (You make your point at the beginning of the paragraph)
E = Example or Evidence (You provide evidence that underpins this point)
E =Explain (You explore the point further and tie it back to the central issue)
(An easy explanation can be found at https://youtu.be/rSbcTqM3yTs
A more developed explanation where you also receive help in using a more sophisticated language when analysing: https://youtu.be/yFco6cvh8K0 )
When writing an analysis like this, the bulk of each paragraph should be your ideas. You should limit retelling the story to just the quotations themselves, and the quotations should be supporting an idea you have already introduced and explained beforehand. Then after the quote, you can elaborate and expand upon that idea, rather than just make a rushed comment about it.

3- Writing Task - Literary Analysis, Final Version
My thesis statement is "The oppressed African-American woman in a male-dominated society, and society's perspective of her as being in a lower rank than men''
In "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker (1982), shows us through an interesting narrative style, such as writing letters the life of Celie (the main character), a poor African American woman living in rural Georgia over a period of thirty years, the struggles she's been through, the sexual abuse she suffered in her childhood when she was 14 years old by her father and the abuse she was subjected to as an adult by her husband.
Celie was not only subjected to physical abuse, but was also subjected to psychological violence when she was forcibly separated from her sister and she is the only one with whom she feels safe. And when she became pregnant from her father, he took her two children from her by force, and she believed that he had killed them, as he warned her "it is better that you tell no one but God".
She finally finds the value and lost identity she sought by falling in love with a woman named Shug Avery.
This essay presents Walker's story ''The Color Purple'' what women suffer from discrimination, racism and domestic violence on the basis of their gender as a woman and underestimate her without a man, and what women suffer also from mistreatment as an African American woman.
To begin with, Celie, the main character in Walker's story who lived in an abusive house. Celie has been repeatedly raped by her father (Alphonso), and she describes the first incidence of violence like this "He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it. But I don't never git used to it. And now I feel sick every time I be the one to cook" (Walker 1982, pg.11). Celie did not only suffer physical violence as a woman, but she also suffered from psychological violence. She became pregnant and gave birth twice, and her children were forcibly taken away from her and made her suggest that they had been killed. As a child whose innocence was taken by cruelty, Celie did not find support from the adults around her, her teacher was a defender of her right to education, but the situation changed on the contrary after Celie's pregnancy. The psychological abuse did not stop at this point, but she was also subjected to separation from her sister Nettie, she is the only one Celie loves and feels safe with. Both were raped by Alphonso, and Celie saved her sister, ''I think about how you laid yourself down for me'' (Walker 1982, pg.133).
Moreover she is taken away from her home by her marriage to (Albert) who keeps hitting and abusing her. He wanted a maid for his children, not a wife. Her first years of marriage were but a continuation of the story of abuse and violence Celie suffered in her childhood home. Celie wonders why all this is happening to her, she didn't complain but feels like a victim.
In addition to, we can see violence against women has become a normal part of daily life. When Alpert's son Harpo asks his father how to control his wife, his response is "Wives is like children, you have to let them know who got the upper hand. Nothing can do that better than a good sound beating." (Walker 1982, pg.35). We see that the relationship of the father and the son is in line with the concept of submission and patriarchal authority. Where he is in control of the rest of the family and demands the children and the women of the house to obey.
What's more Harpo has been trained since childhood in the absolute power of a man over a woman, and that the home and its business belong only to the woman. When his aunt Kate asked him to help with some household chores, he replied "Women work. I am a man"
As well as because of what the woman was exposed to at this time, she placed herself in a lower rank than the man. All the reasons surrounding it lead to one result (there is no value for a woman without a man). The main purpose of a woman's existence was marriage to serve the man first and to serve her children. Thus, even education for women has become useless, as it is basically not of value.
We find that Olinka was not satisfied with her daughter's education, even as Nettie tried to convince her, and her response was "A girl means nothing to herself, only her husband can become a thing" (Walker 1982, pg.144). The woman without a man or children has always been "nothing".
Also, men used women as a tool to satisfy their physical desires and used sex for control and subjugation, they never cared about a woman's desire or consent. Celie said that Albert only had sex with her for himself and his desires, which made her feel humiliated "Most times I pretend I ain't there. He never knows the difference. Never ask me how I feel, nothing. Just do his business, get off, go to sleep" (Walker 1982, pg.79). Shug later told her that it was like "toilet", Albert didn't like Celie he only thought of himself and she didn't approve of her using her like that, which made Celie feel even more insulted.
In conclusion, and based on all of above, the book tells the story of every woman who has been abused, violent and assaulted by men, and how society views women as worthless without a man. The woman was not treated as a human being, but rather as a tool in the hands of the man controlled by him to satisfy his authoritarian and bodily desires. She had no right to refuse or accept. Education was like all matters monopolized by a man, she was not allowed to learn or work, she was only subservient to the service and obedience of her husband. Alice Walker in the book "The Color Purple" also points to the obstacles that women suffer not only as a woman in a male-dominated society, but also in a society that oppresses the African-American society, and women suffered from both sides the most suffering and humiliation.
The female characters in the novel posed social issues and embodied the injustice they were subjected to, but Alex Walker showed how strength can emerge from the womb of suffering. Celie, Nettie, Shug and Sofia are influential female figures who have raised the issue of racism in American society and sexism, but as they find vulnerability they find bonding, and through it they find a way to overcome oppression.
A person's belief in one's worth and attainment of equality is a right that cannot be relinquished regardless of color, gender, or religion.
