From manual to hybrid systems, we have been abdicating our decision making and entrusting complex computer software solutions to make decisions for us in analytics, statistics, and various business functions for many years. However, the very core principles of DSS has evolved over time. As Ai is on the rise again and cognitive computing is bringing intelligence into not only processing but also input and output, the approach to DSS has expanded to include the use of sophisticated algorithms that can model processes in just about any enterprise or business function to guide decision making. This allows users to evaluate multiple scenarios and assess several alternatives more efficiently in much less time.

With the advances in AI with more sophisticated Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) along with Natural Language Processing (NLP), Generation (NLG), and Understanding (NLU), augmented analytics, data science insight generation, and explanation are becoming common Day-to-Day Decision Support System functions. To many this is leading to the democratization of analytics and data science. In other words, we no longer need an expert statistician or a data scientist to produce a higher volume of advanced analysis or generate, operationalize and manage models with analytics that can guide all sorts of decision making and even predict outcomes. This includes some examples such as GPS route planning, crop-planning by farmers, and medical diagnosis.
