Polynomial Modeling Project

With your group, you will complete a polynomial modeling project.

For your group's given problem, complete the following:

Part 1

Create three distinct (different/ separate) prototypes using any materials you want for the given scenario. You need to use the same materials for each prototype.

Ex: In class, I gave you a sheet of paper, and you made three different boxes by cutting different size squares out of each corner.

Part 2

Complete each of the following for your given problem:

a. Determine the dimensions of each prototype.

b. Determine the area of each prototype.

c. Take a picture of each prototype and record the information from parts a and b on the picture. The information should match the given scenario. (For example, if you are starting with 20 inches of material, you need to make sure the amount of material you use for each prototype is 20 inches.)

d. Based on your prototypes, predict the dimensions that would maximize or minimize (depending on your problem) the area. Your answer could be off at this point, and that is ok. Write a paragraph explaining your prediction thoroughly.

e. Come up with the mathematical model (polynomial function), describing the scenario, in terms of one variable. Show all work on how you came up with the model.

f. Use Demos to graph the function in part e. Label your axes.

g. Complete the problem posed. Round final answers to one decimal place as necessary.

h. Create one more prototype of the scenario with the maximum or minimum dimensions, and maximum or minimum area found in part e. Repeat part c for this prototype.

i. In the same picture, include all 4 prototypes with each labeled as in parts c and h.

Part 3

Create a presentation using PowerPoint, Prezi, or PDF (Do not turn in Google Slides. You will receive no credit). Include the information you found in Part 2

Part 4

Each student will individually write 2-3 paragraphs explaining what they personally contributed, and how they worked with partner(s) (with examples); each student email their completed evaluations to me.
