The scenario:

Gulf Air is the state-owned airline and the flag carrier of Bahrain, which was founded in 1950 as Gulf Aviation. Gulf Air is the sponsor of the Bahrain Grand Prix and Bahrain International Air show. It has been certified with 5-star COVID-19 Airline Safety Rating by Skytrax, becoming one of just sixteen airlines and the only the third airline in the world and in the Middle East respectively to currently achieve this top recognition. Gulf Air was formerly a multinational airline owned by Bahrain, UAE, Oman, and Qatar. However, over the period 2002-2007 Qatar, UAE, and Oman left the Gulf Air consortium to solely focus on its national airlines, leaving the airline completely owned by and based in Bahrain.

In 2007, Gulf Air announced cutbacks to 25%of its workforce, roughly 1500 jobs as part of a 2-year restructuring program to stop losses of US$ 1 million a day. The airline continues to be loss-making over the subsequent years, and in 2013 the airline announced that it cut 155 of its total staff alongside four unprofitable routes as part of its restructuring program. As a result of this program the loss reported in 2015 was 24.1 million, an 88% reduction from 2012.

Efforts to become profitable have continued; in January 2019, the carrier announced a boutique business model as part of its business plan for 2019, as it aims to turn around its fortunes.

In 2020,the airline suffers badly, as other airlines worldwide, from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Gulf Air was successfully implemented a recovery plan as a result of a comprehensive risk assessment analysis. The airline soon resumed its fleets to several regional and international destinations starting from summer 2020.

In 2021 there was the Ukrainian conflict with the subsequent sharp rise in fuel prices and the unstable environment for tourism, specially in the EU. This add a pressure on the airline to cope with new economic situation, which is reflected on its performance and put in risk its plan and efforts to become profitable.

This decline is concerning the airlines board and management, and they realise they need to take further action to ensure business is maintained and they return to growth, particularly, the airline has excellent reputation for safety and satisfaction amongst its customers, which is part of the reason it has remained in business for years; however, the airline has no externally recognised quality management system.

The airline has identified several ways in which it might improve its future, these are:

  • expand into new markets, it has identified upgrading its fleet and starting new routes as potential areas which are showing growth, both within the region and internationally.
  • increase the international appeal of its business to attract new customers.
  • improve its competitiveness in the business.
  • improve the productivity and effectiveness of their workforce.

They are aware they need to embrace some changes to ensure the future of the business and have asked you to assist them in this process.
