Tyler is the chief operations officer (COO) of Mining and Drilling Co., a company that manufactures equipment for the mining industry. With the CEO being heavily involved in strategy formulation, mergers and acquisitions, and company finances, Tyler is essentially in charge of running the company. A few weeks ago, Tyler heard Garth, the IT manager, joke about how much advice and help Gus wants with his off-the- job communication technology pursuits, such as setting up a smart house and interconnecting the electronic devices in his home. P 2 Last week Tyler asked Kaitlin, his administrative assistant, how she and her family planned to spend the weekend. Kaitlin said with a sarcastic expression on her face, "As usual, I will have to put a lot of time into deleting the dozens of text messages Gus sends me. I don't do anything to encourage Gus, but he keeps bombarding me with silly messages. Last night he sent me five texts about cute things his dog did recently." Tyler was wondering how he should approach Gus about his behavior unbecoming to a company executive, yet still not in violation of company policy. "I should give Gus some feedback about these problems," thought Tyler. "Yet I don't want to damage my relationship with one of the key leaders at Mining and Drilling." In my opinion, I think that Tyler should approach Gus. Although, he is not doing anything to violate the companies policy, he has done some things that make other people within the company a little uncomfortable. At the end of the story, Tyler states that he does want to discuss Gus's actions, but he is worried about damaging his relationship with of the key leaders at Mining and Drilling (Durbin, 2019, p. 277). I think one technique that Tyler should use is giving some gentle advice and guidance. Durbin describes this concept as being a way to provide an employee with some effective advice to elevate the performance, but not too much that will interfere with two-way communication. (Durbin, 2019, p.270). If I was Tyler, I would use my strength of being a relator because I am seen as someone that people want to come to for advice, so my advice would be used in the best way to not make Gus uncomfortable as well or make him feel bad about himself or his actions. Being a relator allows me to put myself in someone else's shoes to understand a situation. In this situation, knowing I would not want to hurt Gus's feelings or damage my relationship with him, I would give him advice in a way that is motivational and not hurtful. I would understand my boundaries and also take into consideration that he is not actually doing anything wrong that goes against the companies policy.
