I think the bird population will continue to look the same in 5 years because they still possess the same characteristics as when they left their previous home; moreover, they are still being accustomed to their new surroundings. As the bird population encounters these new surroundings, depending on the biome they have settled down in, they will slowly experience the characteristics that must be included in their gene pool to survive. However, since individuals themselves cannot evolve, the whole population must acquire the necessary genes which could take a long period of time. As a result, in time, there will be changes within the population that encourages their fitness. As mentioned, there are some variations in the population, which means they have certain traits or genes that set the population apart; in addition, depending on the biome they have settled in, a certain variation of the population may flourish while others may perish. For instance, if the bird population settles in dry regions, those with favorable traits may be fitter than the others and so may survive and thrive more. This bird population is known for their medium-sized beaks which helps them to pick up insects or seeds but there may be variations in beak sizes; however, the desert-like regions may only provide insects buried deep inside the ground as their source of food and thus favor those with larger beaks.
