The main aim of WEP was to provide protection against casual eavesdropping make a wireless LAN equivalently secure to a (non-encrypted) wired LAN. it allows access control to be set up so that only legitimate users can gain access. Encryption and access control are achieved by issuing nodes with a secret key that could be used for authentication with the Access point, and subsequently for data encryption. WEP uses a stream cipher to encrypt messages. A stream cipher encrypts a stream of bits one bit at a time using a long key, known as a key stream. The key stream looks like a random string of bits but is actually generated in a known way. The sender and recipient privately share the known generation method so that both can create and subsequently use the same key. WEP uses a shorter secret key in order to generate the much longer key stream that is actually used in the encryption process. 2 T215A_TMA_Summer 2021 WEP's solution was to keep part of the shorter, secret key the same for all transmissions (and this can be programmed into both AP and nodes at the setup stage) and to append another random value to it before encryption takes place
