Sometimes Violence is not the Answer to every Situations.
In this 21st century we have seeing more than can bargain for, especially when you are African American, we get mistreated 90% of the time worse than any other citizens. In this assignment we will be covering the topic of a 25-year-old man who got shot and was in critical condition but survive the abuse by a deputy in Ferndale Michigan. According to Carol Thompson, a reporter for the Detroit News, she published an article on April 7/2023 stating that "the deputy shot Harvey rendered life-saving measures". So much is happening between our citizens and the police, sometimes is hard to know what side to take. As much as we understand the importance of law enforcement, sometimes law enforcement takes matters into their own hands, abuses their power and the vow they make to protect and serve us citizens. Sometimes violence is not an answer I've read and watched so many cases where no one deserves to be hurt but they ended up dead at the hands of law enforcement.
On Tuesday, a deputy from the Oakland County sheriff's department receives a call regarding a disturbance at a home where Mr. Harvey Andrew, who was on pre-trial for domestic violence, cut his tether off. When the deputy got there, according to Jessica Dupnack, Mr. Harvey closed himself in a bedroom. At a press conference a Wayne County sheriff said that Harvey had two knives and he also suffered a mental health crisis. While talking to
two deputies through a window Harvey stated that "he wanted to die" two deputies enter the house instead of using a pepper spray or a taser they instead decided to shoot Harvey which is a situation that did not need all that violence to resolve the issue. It is true that Harvey was holding two knives, but it takes someone to be close to you to hurt you with a knife. So, there was a better way they could have managed the situation to get a better result.
Mental health Crisis is an extremely dangerous situation where if it is not managed by a professional it could lead to someone hurting themselves or somebody else. In this situation the individual is unaware of what is going on around them so, the only way out that they know is to hurt themselves or put someone else at risk. Going back to the article, they reported that they have been to the house once before because of his condition but what did they do to fix the situation in the first place? because sometimes some things are met to be taken care of at the same moment that it happened. So, because the police take no measure to help Harvey dealing with his problem, they are to blame for the domestic violence case. Law enforcement should provide training to their officers regarding mental health crisis, they should be able to determine whether a person's behavior is indicated of a mental health, they should have some techniques and resources to solve cases involve individual with mental health crisis.
In the Article Wrote by Jessica Dupnack she stated that "Danger is what it is because you never know what you are going into" this article is reasonable because you never know what people are going though, some people show their needs, and some people will die before they let a family member knows what is going on with them. Back in January my best friend's husband shot himself in front of my best friend, which had left us with more questions than answers. Two months after his death we found out that he was taking pills for depression that he bought from the street. So, we all blame ourselves because if we only knew what was going on through his mind, we could've gotten him the help that he needed and he might still be alive today. So same thing goes for Harvey, law enforcement had been in that house because of his mental health issues but they took no matter to help him, instead they left and called back to the same home after a crime is committed which they could've prevent the whole situation if they were doing their job in the first place. To protect and serve did not apply in his case.
Police officers play an essential role in our community. All law enforcement agencies made a vow to protect and serve, we must trust them to enforce the law in a righteous and honorable way. We do not expect them to violate those very laws which they enforce upon us. It is hard to say that this issue with law enforcement is going to get better in a day, a year or even centuries but it is not. We are always going to have problems with the police about how they oversee situations. It is best if we put our heads together to form a better community for our citizens. Law enforcement needs to provide training to our officers and provide more resources for people with disabilities and mental health illnesses. If they stand by their vows and honor them, if they learn how to solve critical issues without violence, we will have a better community.
