If lst-level cache hit: Both cache have the hit data item. Move the hit data item to the top on both cache. If lst-level cache miss and 2nd-level cache hit: The data item is not in lst-level cache but is in 2nd-level cache. Move the data item to the top of 2nd-level cache and add the item to the top of lst-level cache. If lst-level cache miss and 2nd-level cache miss: Retrieve the data item from disk and add the item to the top of both cache
