If we are devoting our time and studying a course developing our traits and qualities as authentic and inspiring leaders, why are there so many toxic leaders in real life? Greed in industry (pharmaceutical CEOs deliberately addicting customers, top 1% holds 42.5% of US wealth), corruption seen in elected and appointed political officials (embezzling funds, abandoning protection of our fragile environment, lying without repercussions), failed ethical leadership (predatory clergy, lack of human decency, child abuse and human trafficking) just to cite a few examples.

Hitler wrote about this explicitly. "Commanding center stage lends meaning and immortality to a leader's life."

Please read the excerpts from Bad Leadership (Kellerman) (attached as a PDF) and the Followership chapter in our textbook to include The Allure of Toxic Leaders (Lipman-Blumen, 2005).

If the following qualities define Good leaders (Riggio, Psychology Today, 18 Oct 2019), in your opinion can we as Self-Aware Practicing Leaders eventually prevail over evil leadership in our personal and professional lives?

1. Unify and Dont Divide. Good leaders do not create divisions in their constituents.
2. Achieve Results, But Limit Collateral Damage. A good leader is effective, but not at the cost of hurting the well-being of followers or harming the environment or turning friends into foes.
3. Share the Leadership with Followers. They work with followers, consulting with them, caring for them, and developing their shared leadership capacity.
4. Leave the Team, Organization, or Nation Better Off Than They Found It.
