III. Linear Regression and Principal Component Analysis (25 points)
Researchers at General Motors collected data on some U.S. Standard Metropolitan Statistical
Areas (SMSA's) in a study of whether air pollution contributes to mortality. The dependent
variable for analysis is age adjusted mortality ("Mortality"). The data include variables
measuring demographic characteristics of the cities, variables measuring climate characteristics,
and variables recording the pollution potential of three different air pollutants. A modified
version of this dataset is in the Excel file mortality.xlsx supplied along with this assignment. The
variable descriptions are in Table 1. As a simple initial test, we will use regression models to
determine whether air pollution is significantly related to mortality.
Create a new diagram; name it Mortality.
We will first learn how to import an Excel file into SAS Enterprise Miner.
(a) Go to the Sample tab and drag the File Import node into the diagram.
(b) Go to the Properties box of the File Import node and click on the ellipsis against the
Import File option under Train.
(c) Select My Computer and enter the complete path to the location where the file
mortality.xlsx is saved, including the file name (e.g., c:\insy5339\mortality.xlsx) in the box.
