Recently, the Department of Environmental in the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change has revised the Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Regulations. The Regulations stipulate, among others, that any coal-fired thermal power plant operating in Malaysia must meet the GHG emission limit of 500 mg/Nm? for sulphur ioxide (SO2) and 450 mg/Nm? for nitrous oxides (NO.). For the Manjung 1 at SASPS, since it is an aged power plant, both the emissions of SO and NOx are critically related to two factors the firing temperature of the boiler of the coal- fired power plant and the gross calorific value of the coal used during the firing process, which can be simplified into the following equations: Eso2 (T.C) = 287 + (T+ C)(aT) ENox (T.C) = (1+ 3TC)(BC) + 213 where Eson refers to the emission of SO2 (in mg/Nm?), ENo. refers to the emission of NO: (in mg/Nm), Tis the firing temperature (in C). Cis the gross calorific value of coal (in kJ/kg), a is a correction factor of 1 x 10, and B is a correction factor of 1x 10-10.
