Sastia Oyervides April 13, 2023 ECD: 415 Foundations of Play and Learning Week 4: Play Toolbox - Blog Post Integrating Play into the Curriculum Remember as a child playing in the mud? The feeling of the cool, slimy, smooth mud as you squeezed it through your finger. The squishing sound it made as you pushed your feet in and out of the mud. Play-based curriculum is a complex subject but when we take a step back to understand it is how children learn, grow, and develop. Just as we did when we were kids. How to Integrate Play into the Curriculum 1. Engage all the senses. Our senses are what make us human what we smell, taste, see, touch, and hear helps us to remember events or engage in comforting memories. Children learn through their senses as well. Students who walk into my classroom will be engaged in all their senses. In my class, all activities are hands-on and require children to move, jump, run, hop, sing, etc. This is highly beneficial for students' social, cognitive, and emotional development. Who likes to be in a room listening to a boring person talk for 8 hours while you sit in a chair? Not me! In my classroom, we will add a fun twist to state standards that not only engage students but help them make really cognitive connections to the world around them. Students will learn how to count as we count money to buy grocery items in our makeshift grocery store. We will practice writing numbers and letters on our desks that will be covered in shaving cream. We will learn how to socially interact with peers as we play house in our dramatic play center. We will explore science as we sort pinecones into groups that are similar in size. We will have children engaged in their learning with hands-on activities. Differentiating Instruction with Play 1. All are Included. No matter where children are from they will all be presented with an equal learning opportunity. Children who come from other parts of the world will be included in our classroom learning environment. In recent years we have become more aware of students who have learning disabilities such as ADHD, Autism, and Down syndrome to name a few. By creating a play-based curriculum I assure that all those who are in my classroom regardless of disability will be involved and engaged in my classroom. They will be provided equal learning opportunities and will have their needs met as well. Accommodations and modifications will be implemented as I see fit for the individualized need of all my students. Scaffolding will also be utilized as children struggle with concepts so they are assured to succeed and learn to the best of their abilities.
