Implementing on-site generation is not a new concept, and fuel cell systems are becoming an alternative to conventional power generation installations. However, when merely using fuel cells as an alternative to grid or standby generators, the innovative nature of this technology does not begin to be leveraged. Microsoft has studied and tested a new architecture integrating a basic VDC SOFC device with a server rack. The advantages include cost savings and high performance, but simplicity of design is more critical.
