"In 2016, Margaret Small boy started a sewing project among the women in her community with the aim of addressing poverty alleviation and creating jobs and assisting in crime prevention. In 2017,with the help of the Volkswagen Community Trust, GUSCO was formed: 30 women from three independent sewing groups, from different racial groups, joined forces to become a viable business enterprise. Through the Volkswagen Community Trust Incubator Programme, which helps develop
independent social enterprises, GUSCO members completed an industrial sewing course at the Port Elizabeth College. Further assistance from Standard Bank (through a R500 000 loan) made it possible for GUSCO to buy industrial sewing machines and move to larger premises.
With assistance from an enterprise development manager at the Uitenhage Dispatch Development Initiative (UDDI), the group approached Woolworths with a proposal to manufacture reusable shopping bags. At the time, Woolworths was already in a contract with another company (Cape Town‐based Isikhwama) to manufacture the bags. Persistence paid off, however, and Woolworths offered a small portion of its target to GUSCO, agreeing to a trial contract for 300 bags a week to determine if GUSCO could deliver. Initially, GUSCO worked through Isikhwama and were not independent, sending product indirectly to Woolworths through Isikhwama. However, by providing a good quality product and consistently and efficiently achieving the targets, GUSCO has become an independent supplier to Woolworths. Its contract is renewed annually based on performance. GUSCO is producing 10 000 bags a week
for Woolworths and the value of the contract stands at over R3.1 million a year."
