In a caste system, a persons social class is determined by birth. Caste members lived, ate, married, and worked with their own group. A person born into one caste rarely changed castes or mixed with members of other castes. Social rules defined how to behave within a caste and when in the presence people from other castes.

Regarding why one was born into a particular caste, that is the matter of karma. Karma refers to the spiritual principle of cause and effect where intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect).

Good intent and good deed contribute to good karma and future happiness, while bad intent and bad deed contribute to bad karma and future suffering. Those born into top castes, like Brahmin or Kshatriya, earlier had lived good lives, while those born in the Untouchable castes had not.

For centuries Indians born into wretched circumstances have accepted their lot of karma - - punishment for misdeeds in past lives.

This belief explains the persistence of the caste system, and the remarkable fact that a country that is home to one and three of the world's poor has not come apart at the seams. But young people no longer accept Karma unconditionally.
