In a diverse society made up of many cultures and backgrounds, interpersonal intelligence is a valuable thing to develop. It's the ability to read, empathize, and understand others. When people communicate, many times there are implications outside of what is explicitly stated.
Not all communication is verbal. In fact, nonverbal communication is found to account for more than 90% of the total meaning of a message. Nonverbal communication includes metacommunication and kinesic messages.
Imagine you are an employee in an office. Your boss makes the following statements regarding your performance. In Questions 1-5, implication of these metacommunication statements, outside of what is said.
Example: "When you finish editing the report, be sure to proofread your work."
Implication: Your previous reports have included errors.
Example: "Before you leave for the night, turn off the lights in the copy room."
Implication: When I arrive to the office in the mornings I often finds the lights on in the copy room.
Q1: "You must have spent a lot of time on that report."
Q2: "This is your last chance to improve your relationship with the office manager."
Q3: "Remember, you have just one hour for your lunch break."
Q4: "Your excellent work on your last project won't go unnoticed."
Q5: "When you return from vacation, let's discuss a career plan for you."

The same two team members canceled at the last minute for the first scheduled meeting.
