Question: Some sites, let you browse/search while some make it mandatory to login before you can search or buy something. Why? When you would you go with these kinds of model. Discuss.

answer1: The only reasons I can think of for why a site would force the user to login before browsing is if the site is centered around sensitive information, or if there was exclusive content only for paying members. An example of the former would be a banking website, there really isn't much to do at the site without login in first. Since the site contains sensitive data it wouldn't want to use cookies to display some information about your account, like balances or account numbers. In order to access this information you would most definitely want to login first. I can't really think of a good example of the second reason. A site like Costco allows users to browse to some degree without logging in, but does hide prices for certain items to only paying members. Other shopping sites wouldn't want to restrict users to logging in before browsing because that would probably decrease traffic to the site and sales.

2answer:

Many web applications require login to see core content, and many applications don't require login and just want you to click everywhere. The model chosen is determined by the ultimate goal of the website. Websites like Amazon who want to sell you something will allow browsing and searching with no login required, until of course you need to add sensitive payment information which does require a login. Other financial websites or banks will require a login earlier in the process for you to see your core, sensitive content. Of course, since banks want you as a customer, they will allow you to browse and search the site to view that bank's loan offerings and customer perks. Only when you need to access sensitive data will a login be required.
