In Chapter $7,$ Borgatti et al$.$ discuss ego networks, which start from a single individual and only include vertices and edges that fall within a specific number of degrees of that individual. $($For instance, it might only include peers who fall within two degrees of separation from the central individual.$)$ Focusing only on the connections that surround a single individual is quite different from assessing the entire network representing a given issue or communication context. For instance, examining an ego network can provide us with an in$-$depth understanding of the central individual's interpersonal connections and the resources to which they have close access, but at the cost of our understanding of the larger social system, structure, and context within which that individual is embedded.

Bearing that in mind, under what circumstances would it be useful for us to visualize and$/$or attempt to analyze an ego network rather than the complete network graph representing all connections between individuals? When might an ego network be valuable for work within your field?
