In computer science, the term "black box" is used in the context of defining some procedure in terms of its inputs and outputs only. We cannot see inside of the black box $($in this case, for example, we may not understand the inner workings of some function or procedure$),$ we only can offer informed speculation as to what might be happening based on the transformation of the input into an output.
