In developing a standard for evaluating pre-college science instruction in the United States, an experiment was conducted to evaluate a teacher-developed, standards-based, activity-oriented, question-centered "Biology: A Community Context" (BACC) curriculum. This method was compared to historical presentation through reading, vocabulary, and rote-learned facts. Students were tested on biology concepts that highlighted biological knowledge and process knowledge in the traditional sense. The perhaps not so surprising results of a test on biology concepts, published in The American Biology Teacher, are shown in the table below. shown in the table below.
