In Module 5, lecture 1, we learned about the ways in which folks in ecology & economics understand the values of different ecological resources. Recall that we broke these values down into use values and non-use values. You can find a refresher of these values both within the lecture and within the "help guide" provided in the Module Overview page.

For this assignment, consider what you read in Perusall activity by Foley et al. (2007). In the reading, Foley and colleagues go through a number of ecosystems goods and services that are available within and being lost from the Amazon Basin.

Instructions

(1) Using the Foley et al. (2007) article, identify the following from the Amazon Basin:

(a) Identify TWO direct use values: ONE consumptive, and ONE non-consumptive. Explain why you believe that these are consumptive and nonconsumptive direct use values.

(b) Identify ONE indirect use value and explain why you believe this is an indirect use value.

(2) Now, think about one of the problems that Foley and colleagues focus on in their article: Amazon Basin deforestation. With this problem in mind, do the following:

(a) Identify ONE cost and ONE benefit related to Amazon Basin deforestation.

(b) Explain whether you think the cost you identified outweighs the benefit you identified. Refer to one of the values you identified in Part (1) in your explanation.
