In my old science classes, we mostly took notes and followed recipes. Inquiry feels different than that, like it gives the students a chance to voice their thoughts. Students ask the question, then they test their ideas, and then explain with the evidence they came up with while the teacher just coaches them along the way. I feel like this method gives the student creative control. This, to me, would help the students be more interested in what's going on! The 5E model gives an easy routine. Hook their interest, let them explore, clear up the idea, try it in a new way, and then finally check out what stuck. (Guido, Corujo 2023). The Gillies interview also showed how talk, teamwork, and timely feedback matter for a real understanding. (Bulba).
To make these methods work in my class, I'll start small and keep it real. In engage, I'll use a quick question or short video to spark curiosity and tap into prior knowledge. In explore, students will try hands-on tasks in partners or small groups while I listen in and ask probing questions and open ended questions. I will also use short surprise inquiries when a topic is hot because curiosity warms up the brain and helps memory! For younger grades I think that questions and experiments need to stay a little more guided and concrete. My job will be to help keep the students on track and follow experiment procedures. Exit tickets are always a great way to get a grasp on what the students are understanding and what they may be having a problem getting. The scientific method still fits inside 5E. During the explore and explain steps, we test an "if-then" idea, change one variable, measure the results and keep the rest the same and then repeat again and then finally explain what the data from it all means. (Steps of the scientific method, 2019) If a concept needs a quick direct explanation first then I will do that and then jump back into inquiry!
