Draw a block diagram for the following design project overview. Include mass and molar flowrates for all
Question:
Draw a block diagram for the following design project overview. Include mass and molar flowrates for all streams, assuming perfect separation. Label the output streams from the distillation section with the most volatile on top and the least volatile on bottom. Silicon pellets (initial diameter Di = 500 μm) are reacted with gaseous hydrogen chloride in a fluidized bed reactor to form trichlorosilane (TCS) and hydrogen gas. The pellets that leave the reactor, entrained in the effluent, have an average diameter Df = 50 μm and must be filtered from the effluent. The reactor is run with a 10% excess of HCl, to account for gas that bubbles through the reactor without contacting the pellets. Silicon tetrachloride (STC) is also produced in the reactor, with 5% of the produced TCS being further converted to STC. The plant processes 15,000 tons of Si per year. Noncondensable gases, defined as components with boiling points 150 K below the next most volatile component, can be separated by flash. Remaining components must be separated by distillation.
