Example of an excellent first reply to the instructor.
The following is a discussion example, including the instructor's question, one student's original posting, and another secondary response.
INSTRUCTOR posts for discussion board:
After reading Chapter 1 in the Dana book, think about how you would describe conflict from a professional perspective. Start your response by completing the following sentence: "Conflict is..." then support your answer with theoretical and applied knowledge from your experience.
After you post your response to this Discussion Question, read and comment on one of your classmates' posts.
Example of a good first response (to the Instructor's Discussion Question) posted by a STUDENT:
Conflict is driven by human nature and occurs in interactions between people whose interests or functions are interdependent and perceived as incompatible. People experience conflict when they are interdependent and must rely on one another for results. Interdependence is critical because it sets up an environment where individuals must choose to compete or cooperate in a situation, driving conflict interaction. Conflict conditions include anger and the perception that the other party or parties are at fault for various reasons. This also leads people to act in ways that cause a problem negatively affecting one another's productivity (Dana, 2001, p. 5). Conflict can exist even if an individual or group of people merely perceives it and does not necessarily rely on the presence of an objective situation. Therefore conflict inevitably occurs when an influence attempt by one party is resisted by another party or merely "perceived" to be resisted (Field, 1998, p.372).

SECONDARY RESPONSE -Good example of another student's reply to the first post (above).
Hi Amica,
I appreciate your interpretation of what conflict means. We are indeed human, and conflicts will occur. Perception is critical to conflicts, as our perceptions allow us to think that a conflict exists. It is also our perceptions that will lead us to an outcome. The dispute is resolved if we believe the outcome is a win-win solution. We expect the result to be amicable, and the dispute will remain if we do not perceive it to be. Conflicts are intertwined with various human emotions and behaviors.
As you have stated, conflicts are not always harmful; some conflict instances can be constructive to the work process. It can allow ideas and strategies to flow; hopefully, the outcome will be the best scenario. Our history is filled with labor conflicts with positive results. If we did not challenge each other as human nature, our society would not have progressed to what it is today.
