In the first module, you created a simple visual of your default mode of ethical reasoning. In this activity you will revise it, or perhaps even replace it with something new. Create an image that represents what it means to you to be an ethical professional, using such concepts as relationship, well-being, and trust. Consider the examples provided. In Module 1, the sample SmartArt image represented a person who uses all three conventional modes of ethical reasoning, but tends to give more weight to consequences than to principles or virtues. Now, in Module 2, that same person has asked herself, what is my profession? She identifies herself as a writer. Next, she asks, who are my clients? What type of relationship do I have with my clients? What significance does that particular type of relationship have for my clients' trust? In other words, she identified the affinity relationship as typical of her profession as a writer. In an affinity relationship, why do clients trust? What vital need do they have? In her experience, readers trust writers to be honest, so she asked, why do they trust me do be honest, and why do I believe they can trust me? Notice what happened when she asked these questions. While she realized that she has a duty to the truth, and that bringing truth to the world means bringing good to the world, she realized above all that her clients can trust her because of two basic virtues: she will tell the truth and she will care, even when it's hard. That came as a surprise! While she identified a duty and a consequence at the heart of her profession, she discovered that the essence of her clients' trust lies in her strong moral character. That was a surprise because, as noted, in Module 1 she thought that she defaulted in the direction of consequences
