In this assignment, I would like you to start your essay by writing the thesis paragraph and two paragraphs supporting that thesis with a close-reading of the short story you are working with. Your thesis should follow these jobs of a thesis paragraph: . Raise the subject naturally (start with a general discussion of the topic of the story and your discussion - racism, mental health, immigration...) Set the scene and tell about the story (author, title, what it's about, and that it addresses this topic) State your thesis clearly and directly (underline in this draft please) . Set out your plan for the essay (that this will be a research essay discussing cultural and historical context as well as close reading) Get the reader ready to begin the close reading The close reading paragraphs should contain no fewer than 3 quotes each.
