In this assignment, you are required to choose a relatively simple and relatively affordable consumer product that need manual effort to operate(e.g. spanner, stapler, fishing reels, etc) or toy that you are interested in which you will isolate the subcomponents of the product and discover forces or/moments that act on these subcomponents. You are required to carry out research beyond lecture notes and textbooks to find the needed information for your assignment. For e.g. weight of the material of your product, other material properties, types and functions of machine elements which are found in your product etc. You are required the following tasks: 1. 2. 3. Draw the free-body diagrams for these two cases and predict/estimate the applied loads. Show all forces and where they act. List all assumptions that are made. From these loads, solve for the reaction forces and/or moments. Solve for any unknowns based on your free-body diagram. Take each individual piece (the subcomponents) from the two cases above and carry out the following: a. Draw the free-body diagram for each piece. b. Using equilibrium i.e. force and moment equilibrium must be satisfied for each component, determine the internal forces and moments i.e. forces or/and moments transmitted between the different individual pieces. Write a final report no more than 10 pages which consist of the following: a. A description of the product and how it function b. Show the tasks 2) to 5) above c. Drawings or pictures of your actual product A discussion/conclusion section about the product. Was it designed well? State what you think is interesting or clever parts of the design. How could the design be improved? What simplifying assumptions which you make in the analysis above that may account for possible wrong answers. How can the components be designed to avoid overloading to avoid failure? 4. 5. Within one week you should decide on the product and find your lecturer during office hours or after class to get your product approved. 6. Take apart the product (if possible) and identify two possible locations or situations where failure would most likely to occur.
