In this assignment, you will choose a scenario to complete an energy audit report based on the following criteria:
The scenario must be anchored on a unit of analysis, such as a building, an operation, a vehicle fleet, a community, a region, an industry, etc.
Stay away from overly complex situations, like large existing communities or businesses. A small business, a subdivision, or even a city block would be more suitable than a city.
Make sure you can obtain energy consumption and fuel mix data for your unit of analysis.
For example, if your scenario is a business and your unit of analysis is a building, you should have sufficient access to conduct an energy audit and figure out how much energy the building consumes.Try not to pick locations for which it is difficult to obtain energy datafiguring out your homes electricity fuel mix is much easier if it is in the State of California as opposed to Timbuktu.
This could be a scenario 100% from real life (e.g., your home) or real life-based (e.g., a company that is modeled on a real business).
Completing this energy audit will help you to connect the power used and how it's distributed. This can then be used in comparison with other cities and countries, and how a possible transition can be made to less consumption and/or cleaner energy sources.
Energy Data Collection
Collect the energy consumed by your selected scenario (house, building, region, city, etc.) over the course of at least three months. Ideally, you would want to have a month of spring and a month of summer with the three months of summer. With data on hand, note the following:
Hourly consumption for a full week.
Daily consumption over a month.
Monthly consumption over the months.
Determine annual consumption based on the data.
Energy Analysis and Calculation
Identify the times of peak power usage. Explain why you think your scenario had peak power consumption during these times.
Identify differences in daily consumption between weekdays and weekends. What do you think is the source of such variations?
Energy Usage Audit
List sources of energy consumption. The list should include major appliances, machinery, and other sources that consume energy and are regularly used in your scenario.
Conduct research for all the appliances/machinery and list the wattage of each item and the number of hours each item is used in a given week.
Chart the usage by weekday and notice any differences in weekend use.
Using the data, plot the usage over the same month to get an estimate of per capita use.
Energy Efficiency
Based on your findings, propose a plan to reduce your energy consumption by a minimum of 25%.
