In this assignment, you will read the sample observation and identify the statements that are objective and the statements that are subjective. Remember that objective statements are ones that are factual and don't involve interpretation. Subjective statements are ones where personal feelings, ideas, biases have been included. "She is happy" is NOT an objective statement. "She was smiling and laughing" is an objective statement. Keep this in mind; have you ever been in a situation where you were uncomfortable or someone said something you didn't care for, but you had to remain pleasant to keep the peace or to not hurt someone's feelings? You may have been smiling on the outside, but you were not happy on the inside.

1. Underline the words/statements that objectively describe the child's behavior (factual). Highlight the words/statements that are subjective (judgements, opinions, labels). Every sentence should be highlighted or underlined (you might even find some examples where half the sentence is objective but the other half is subjective; in this case, highlight the portion that is subjective, and underline the portion that is subjective.

Sample Observation Joshua was eager to play with the trucks. He was sitting with his feet folded under him. He smiled broadly, his eyes squinted, and his front teeth showing as he leaned over and pulled the truck from the shelf. As he lifted the truck with his right hand, he spun the front tire of the truck with his left hand and returned to sitting with his feet folded under him. Joshua was having a lot of fun! He put the truck on the floor and started to say "vvrrroooomm, vvvvrrrrooooommm" as he pushed the truck. His eyes were wide with excitement. Marcus walked over and sat down about 2 feet away from Joshua. When Marcus sat down, Joshua grabbed the truck off the floor, pulled it close to his chest, turned his body away from Marcus, and said, "Mine!", hugging the truck close to his chest. Joshua prefers to play alone, he doesn't like sharing his toys. With his back to Marcus, Joshua gently placed the wheels on the truck on the carpet again, the back wheels first, then the front wheels. He pulled the truck along the floor in a straight line while mumbling to himself. His knees were still folded under him, he was bearing weight on his left arm, with his hand flat on the floor. Joshua was in his own little world, he was not paying attention to anything else but the truck.
