In this Case study we will look at the conduct of Ms. Suzanne Smith and an incident that took place on the 15th of September 2018 in the Emergency department where Ms. Smith was the nurse in charge of the emergency department. The following is an excerpt from the case Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia v Smith (Review and Regulation) [2020] VCAT 173 At approximately 5:00 pm on 15 September 2018, a patient attended the Emergency Department at Northeast Health. The patient attended after an intentional prescription drug overdose. At approximately 5:27 pm, Ms Smith entered the area of the Emergency Department where the patient was located. The patient was attempting to leave the Emergency Department. Between approximately 5:27 pm and 5:29 pm: Ms Smith walked over to the patient and positioned herself between the patient's wheelchair and the exit; The patient attempted to light a cigarette and Ms Smith took the cigarette from the patient; The patient lunged, while remaining seated in the wheelchair, at Ms Smith attempting to grab at her.
