CBT effectively assists clients in opening up and understanding cognitions that may have been avoided or ignored in the past, and although this portion of therapy can be very cognitive-forward, behaviour and physiology are important to include in treatment since so many diagnoses bring forward physical and behavioural symptoms (Kennerley et. al., 2017). Because of this, physical techniques can be extremely useful in treating a variety of disorders due to their ability to disrupt the maintenance cycle often associated with said disorders by reducing the physical symptoms that manifest (Kennerley et. al., 2017). Relaxation techniques and controlled breathing, for example, are effective short-term coping strategies that will help clients through behavioural exercises that break the cycle of maintenance (Kennerley et. al., 2017). By breaking this cycle and having more control over their physical symptoms, the client may be able to shift their cognitions and beliefs with improved concentration, which could ultimately reduce the anxious feelings they might be experiencing (Kennerley et. al., 2017).
