Increased globalization impacts labor relations on a micro and a macro level. Multinational companies often struggle to integrate differing cultures. This can be especially difficult when the two countries have profoundly different approaches to labor relations.

Watch the 2019 documentary American Factory on Netflix[1] which follows the opening of the Fuyao plant in Dayton, Ohio and the UAW organizing drive.

After watching the video, please answer the following questions:

1. Identify at least 3 noticeable cultural differences between the American and Chinese workers.

2. Identify at least 3 differences in the work life at the Fuyao China location vs. the work life at the Fuyao Dayton location.

3. Based on what we have learned in class this semester, what were your thoughts/impressions of the Fuyao Workers Union as compared to American unions? What conflict of interest exists with Shimeng as the First Secretary?

4. What internal and external factors in the business environment led management and the union toward conflict?

6. How did the cultural differences influence the Union vote? In what ways were those differences exploited?

7. In your opinion was there a better way to integrate the cultures?
