ind a program where recreation professionals (like you in the future!) provide leisure, recreation, or sport activities for people with disabilities. Try to find a program that exists in Florida, but if you need to, you can expand your search to the United States. Also, try to find a program that involves an activity that you like to do and that is important in your life.
This can be any type of program and may include a specific activity such as golf, basketball, tennis, SCUBA, sailing, cycling, fishing, running, just name a few! Also, don't forget such activities as the creative arts: the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and other performing arts programs. Find a specific program that exists as a non-profit, private, or public (city, county, state) based program. For example, if you use Special Olympics go to a specific city, county, or regional program that interests you... don't just use the national site. Be specific.
And the program can be for people (children, adults and/or older adults) with disabilities in general or for a specific disability or illness such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, amputations, spinal cord injuries, developmental disabilities, autism, psychiatric disorders, cardiac disorders, Alzheimer's Disease, hearing impairments, visual impairments, at-risk youth... just to name a few! For ideas on specific disabilities refer to the website on types of disabilities.
In addition and to help you get started, here are a few resource websites that include specific activities. You can find a specific program within these sites or it can give you ideas of key words to search on your own.

- After reviewing the readings for this week most specifically about diversity, disability, leisure, and inclusion describe at least five benefits of the activity(ies) in this program for the participants with a disability(ies)? Please include some of the terms the author uses within the textbook.
- Write 2 sentences advocating for your program.
Example:
So as an example, I will complete the quiz on a program that I found!
The program I found which involves an activity (horsebacking) that is very important in my life is Good Hope Equestrian Training Center. It is a non-profit organization that provides equine therapy for people with disabilities. The website is:http://www.ghetc.org/(Links to an external site.)
1) The mission of Good Hope is to provide children, youth and adults with varying conditions quality programs designed to enhance their independence, personal potential and quality of life. Using the equine as its tool and its 20-acre facility as its classroom, Good Hope is committed to annually expanding program services to meet the educational, recreational and rehabilitative needs of South Florida's culturally diverse, disabled populations.
2) The benefits of these activities for children and adults with disabilities include:
- Experiencing a sense of freedom to participate
- Experiencing a sense of autonomy or independence
- Developing motor skills
- Developing social skills through social interaction with other children and adults
- Learning about the environment and taking care of it
- Gaining a sense of community
- Learning to ride!
3) (Here I would advocate for Good Hope. I did not provide an example because I want you to critically think about the content you have learned and how you would promote your program.)
