What is plagiarism in a research paper and why it is an important topic in higher education?

Plagiarism is taking the words of another person and presenting them in your own as your own words. It is stealing the words of another person as your own and not giving the original owner credit for their work. Plagiarism is important in higher education because in higher education students are to create their own ideas and critically think about the topics they are discussing. Prevention of plagiarism ensures that the students are researching their topics and putting in the work rather than copying someone else's work.

What is an in-text citation and when do you use it? Provide an example.

In text citations according to OWL Purdue (2024), "referring to the works of others in your essay" (para. 2). They give supporting points and validity to the student in his or her essay when referencing a reputable source.

What is a reference page? Provide an example of an APA reference.

A reference page is at the end of an essay with the details of the in-text citations referenced throughout the paper. For the quote in answer 2 the APA reference would be:

One formatting rule I tend to forget is that in text citationsshould always be referred to in the past tense. For example:

NASA (2023) states, "the moon revolves around the earth" (p. 10).

This is incorrect, it should be:

NASA (2023) stated, "the moon revolves around the earth" (p. 10).
