STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

STANFORD TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Babysitting my younger siblings and cousins started as a chore for me. Initially, I detested this responsibility as an older sibling, because it often interrupted my leisure time to play games or relax. However, with time, this responsibility fortuitously ignited my passion for children's education. I developed a fascination with the complexity of teaching and its impact on children's development. I am excited to pursue a graduate program in elementary education to deepen my knowledge and skills, enabling me to support the transformation of the child education sector in my home country, Ghana

During my undergraduate studies, I initially did not recognize my passion for working with children. Following my mother's guidance, I pursued a degree in Banking and Finance, intending to join the family's accounting firm for financial stability. However, I soon became disenchanted with the finance field, questioning whether I was pursuing a career for monetary gain or genuine passion.

A turning point came when I enrolled in the Success Genius career coaching program at my church. Through introspective sessions reflecting on my interests and strengths, I discovered my deep love for working directly with children. From babysitting and caring for my younger relatives to assisting neighboring kids with their homework, these experiences brought me unparalleled fulfillment compared to the business field. Now, my dream is to become a passionate and inspiring educator dedicated to teaching and mentoring young learners.

In my sophomore year of college, I devoted most weekends to working with children in my underserved neighborhood, where I initiated a Reading and Numeracy Intervention Program. Using phonemes, blends, and the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) Foundations resources, I taught young learners to read and witnessed remarkable improvements in their skills. Two students who initially struggled to sound out individual phonemes and blend them into basic words were soon reading simple sentences with confidence, reinforcing my commitment to the transformative power of early literacy support. Observing the children's progress and the impact of my Reading Intervention Program further solidified my commitment to fostering growth and learning.

Moreover, I noticed some students experiencing anxiety while attempting Math problems, which evoked memories of my fears during childhood due to harsh teaching methods. This inspired me to delve into effective teaching techniques that make learning enjoyable for young learners. By implementing a "reinforcement" strategy and adopting a patient and supportive approach, I observed reduced anxiety and renewed interest in Math among my students. This experience taught me that a supportive, empathetic approach creates opportunity for effective learning, shaping my commitment to create a classroom where every child feels safe to explore, learn, and grow. I believe that recognizing each child's unique way of learning is essential, so I aim to nurture curiosity, encourage risk-taking in learning, and create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves- an approach I am eager to further develop in graduate school

To gain official work experience in a school setting, I secured a competitive internship position at the British International School in Ghana as a Year 1 Teaching Support. This opportunity exposed me to children from diverse backgrounds and learning abilities, prompting me to develop a multi-faceted pedagogy using various techniques, such as visuals and interactive learning, to ensure comprehensive understanding.

For my mandatory service in Ghana under the National Service Scheme, I opted to work as a co-teacher for 3rd grade at the American International School in Ghana. Under the guidance of a teacher with Primary Year Program certification, I honed my skills in inquiry-based teaching, fostering a love for learning in students and nurturing them as lifelong learners. This experience solidified my commitment to making a positive impact on young learners' education.

Given my experiences and aspirations, I am enthusiastic about applying to the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) Elementary Education Master's Program. The program's emphasis on equity teaching, powerful pedagogical practices to help serve the diverse needs of learners, and teaching placement to learn from expert co-teachers and supervisors aligns perfectly with my desire to bridge educational gaps in underserved areas and incorporate inquiry-based teaching methods.

At STEP, I am eager to take courses like EDUC 228E, "Becoming Literate in School," which will strengthen my understanding of enhancing literacy development among young learners, and EDUC 244E, "Building Classroom Communities," which will help me design a classroom environment that fosters learning, encourages curiosity, and supports every student's success. Additionally, I look forward to joining the Language to Literacy Research Lab, especially the CLAVES Project, to volunteer my time towards the literacy intervention program for young learners.

My dedication and passion for education make me a strong fit for STEP and the Elementary Education Master's Program. I am eager to learn from esteemed faculty, such as Rebecca D. Silverman, who will mentor and prepare me to meet children's literacy needs and collaborate with her to find novel strategies to provide effective literacy intervention for learners. The comprehensive education and wide range of resources at STEP represent the perfect next step to explore and deepen my expertise in tutoring and mentoring children, ultimately making a meaningful impact on their lives.

Through my education at STEP, I am confident that I will accomplish my goal of becoming an educator who leads change in young learners' education, helping them unlock their full potential. In the long run, I envision establishing my schools across Ghana, particularly in underserved areas, to address educational disparities and create opportunities for all children. By prioritizing the academic and emotional needs of children, I aim to bridge the educational gap and challenge the notion of education as a luxury.
