INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARTICLE SELECTION
- Select 2 articles from academic journalson a topic of your own choosing (see a suggested list of journals at the end of this page). Provide the URL or DOI link to these articles. These articles must meet the criteria indicated below. The instructions are simple. Please follow them.
- The topic must pertain to corrections/punishment in the ADULT system only. No juveniles! A corrections/punishment topic can include anything having to do with prisons, probation, parole, jails, fines, home confinement, electronic monitoring/GPS, offender reentry, offender treatment programs, work release centers, offender educational/vocational programs, specialty courts (e.g., drug, mental health), etc.
- Each article must address the exact same issue. For example, an article about the effect of probation caseload size on recidivism is NOT the same as an article about the effect of probation treatment on recidivism. Similarly, a recidivism study on an in-prison drug treatment program is NOT the same as a recidivism study on a reentry program in the community.
- The articles cannot be written by the same author (s).
- The articles must be original empirical studies.
- Do NOT select an article that is a literature review (i.e., systematic review or meta-analysis). These are studies that are focused entirely on analyzing the methods and findings of previously published studies.
- Do NOT select an article that is a descriptive piece. This is when an article is simply arguing for or against a particular idea, practice or model with no original data presented or collected.
- To quickly confirm that an article is empirical, read the abstract and look for references to sample size, method of data collection. If there is no mention of these, then it is not an empirical study.
The articles must have been published within the past 10 years.
Embed links to selected articles in the PowerPoint file you submit.
You cannot use the same articles as someone else in the class. There are thousands of articles out there. The likelihood of picking the same ones should be minimal.
