Approach this assignment as if you were new to this culture and you are attempting to understand how color is perceived.
Describe the basic difference(s) between the men's side and the women's side of the chart? For example, which group uses more descriptive words for the colors. Explain what assumptions you could draw about gender from this observation?
Looking at the three different shades of colors, e.g., red (1-3), orange (4-6), yellow (7-9), green (10-12), blue (13-15), purple (16-18), and gray (19-21) how would you determine which card best represents the prototype for that color. Explain why you chose one of the three cards as the representative card. [Refer to your notes on focal meaning and prototypes.]
Eliminate the simple color terms, e.g., red, orange, green, etc., and the adjectives light, dark, pale, etc. and then group the different adjectives used to describe the colors into categories, e,g, tangerine, lime, and peach are fruits. Label each group. What can you tell about the culture from the adjectives used?
