Instructions: From the information below, construct a business report to help the business owner with the issue described. It should appeal primarily to the consuming public and it should cover the wants and needs of management in relation to the public.

Here is some information you may find helpful.

Background: Jason Gilliland is a 28-year-old regional manager of a well-known fast-food chain. He is working a territory that includes much of south Mississippi and hes based in Hattiesburg. Hes been in fast food since his teen years and decided to make it a career when his current company offered to pay for his last two years of college if hed work as one of their regional managers for 5 years in return. He trained in all positions while still in school and has now been with the company full-time for six years. Hes single, makes a good paycheck, and likes what he does.

But the Corona Virus has kicked his business square in the employment sector. Jason cannot find enough employees to adequately cover the shifts in each of the six locations that are in his territory. The restaurants operate from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. split between two teams of workers who all work an 8-hour shift with periodic short breaks and one 30-minute break usually set in the latter part of the shift. An adequate team for each shift would be 8-10 employees, split between counter help, cooks, cleaners, and swing workers. Right now, hes working with an average of 5-7 employees per shift and workers are burning out daily.

Now its your turn:

Jason would like you to put together a report determining the following:

  1. How can his company best attract and keep workers in a marketplace where a lot of employers are having the same problem? What kinds of incentives should his firm offer to try to attract and keep workers? What can his firm do that others might not be able to do or might not want to do? How can he compete?
  2. What kind of demographics can you research that will provide a picture of who and what kind of person company recruiters should target. Also, what channel is going to be the most effective for finding those workers?
  3. What other research can help you identify additional data that will be helpful in improving the employment situation for Jason and others like him?
  4. Is this a short or long-term problem? Are there short and long-term answers to all these questions.

Examine public records and do basic research to come up with at least three recommendations for Jason to take to his bosses for consideration. Use the writing prompts included in chapter 4 to help you develop the report.

The restaurant industry in particular has been hit hard by a lack of workers. Why is that? There may be some research by now about this (and you should look for it), but do some investigating of your own: Why are your friends no longer working in such jobs? What reasons do they give for not taking restaurant jobs in general or specific types of restaurant jobs.

When you finish your report, write a short paragraph telling how you constructed the report, how many times you wrote and rewrote portions or all of the report, and how positive you believe your recommendations would be for a fast-food employer, based on what data that you gathered or consulted.
