Instructions: Read the case and respond to the questions below. Jim Stanley recently accepted his first management job after graduating in the top 5% of his college class with a degree in Management. Jim's position was operation manager for a medium sized manufacturing plant. By working hard in the company's training programme and spending considerable time studying on his own, Jim gained an in-depth understanding of the company's policies on how jobs are to be done. From Jim's first day on the job, he carefully explained to employees how the company's policies and procedures are to be followed in accomplishing all work. Even with repeated explanations, some employees insisted that they be allowed to do their jobs their own way, which Jim felt was not according to company policies. Jim cautioned David, one of the employees who continually refused to cooperate, he said, "You are going to have to do the job according to company's procedures". David replied, "No, sometimes you have to be practical and get around the company's bureaucratic procedures. We can do the best job when we do it our own way". At this point Jim wondered if there was any way to persuade the employees that things must be done according to company policies and procedures. Jim knew that some form of control had to be effected in order to ensure compliance on the job. The company did not have a HR manager, so Jim discussed his concerns with the HR functionaries. The discussion and subsequent examination of the employees' files revealed that they did not have a contract of employment on their files.
