INSTRUCTIONS The following case study will be employed as an in-class exercise. The instructor will provide further instructions. Students will be put in groups and each group will submit in writing a summary of the advice given and the documentation produced from this information. Family Sponsorship Assignment Charles, a resident of Alberta, met Charlotte online through an internet game called Dragons and Runes. Charlotte is a U.S. citizen who has lived all her life in Kentucky. After a year of emails and video chats Charles decided to visit Charlotte and took vacation time from work to got to Bowling Green to meet her. Over the next three years the two took turns visiting each other whenever they could, until last year (February 14) when Charlotte flew into Calgary International Airport and stayed on with Charles in his residence in Bragg Creek. The two married in Banff National Park on the 12th two months ago this year and now want to go through the process of Charles sponsoring Charlotte for her permanent residency in Canada. Charles and Charlotte do not want to be separated through the process. They want to know if Charlotte can stay in Canada and reside with Charles as the file is being processed, and if Charlotte can make visits back home from time to time. They want to know what difference it would make if Charlotte went back to Bowling Green to wait out the process in terms of time, costs, and likeliness of success. Charlotte is here on a six-month visit. She wants to go back to Kentucky to visit her mother who is very ill but says she would come back to Canada right away. What is the advice that you would give them? What further information do you need? Complete an application for them. See details on the next page.
