Rain Forest Coffee & Tea
Willa Raine had long been attracted to the laidback environments of typical coffee shops but she wasn't very interested in the usual coffee shop menu. Her goal was to open a small shop with an atmosphere like coffee shops but with a wider selection of drinks ie coffees, teas, nutritional smoothies, international drinks so that her customers could experience the variety of flavors that she had come to love during her travels. Thus was born Rain Forest Coffee & Tea, a oneofakind store located downtown in a midsized university city in the northwestern US
To help reduce startup costs, Willa and her husband fabricated most of the shop's furniture from recycled plywood. The shop is inviting, with warm lighting, a soft color scheme, comfortable seating, and enough tables to support customers at once. Willa welcomes all customers to Rain Forest; the message "All are welcome here. Hate is not" is posted above the front door. This attitude, carried out by Willa and her staff, has created a unique climate at Rain Forest. She deeply wants her customers to be treated as more than a source of revenue.
Since opening in Rain Forest has enjoyed a degree of success ie for the first two years, the shop made a modest profit after expenses but the COVID pandemic presented a significant challenge. Willa was forced to reduce staff and even closed the shop's doors for six months early in the pandemic when a large part of her clientele university students was sent home. Thankfully, Rain Forest had already developed a small online business that shipped coffee beans and dry teas to customers. Reduced costs and small, but steady, revenue from online business allowed the company to stay afloatbut just barely. When the shop reopened, the business quickly rebounded to prepandemic levels but since then revenues have plateaued at that level.
Eventually, Willa is going to be forced to decide whether to keep the business. Passion projects are great, but with a growing family, the profits won't be enough to keep them going. In the meantime, Willa has resolved to work harder to determine why her business isn't growing. She thinks that other coffee shops in town seem to get more business from students, but she isn't sure why.
