Intel's new Atom processor (code-named Silverthorne) is designed to consume only a fraction of the power of a traditional processor. The processor gets away from complex architectures and large L2 caches and closer to slimmed-down energy-saving CPUs tailored to the specific job they are intended to do. The processors are a popular choice for ultra thin, notebook computers that will be almost as fast as, but far less power-hungry, than their more conventional counterparts.
