Introduction:

NOTE: This practical needs to be written up using HaHaMrDC

A ticker-timer is a device which can be used for recording both time and distance. A ticker-timer vibrates up and down every 1/50 second. The important fact about ticker-tapes is that the time between dots is always the same. Most ticker-timers work on alternating current, i.e. at 50 cycles per second; this is why there is 1/50th of a second between dots, or each dot will be made 1/50th of a second apart.

If set up correctly, the ticker-timer will leave a dark mark on a piece of ticker-tape. If this tape is attached to a moving object, a series of dots appear on the ticker-tape as it is pulled through the ticker-timer. The further apart the dots appear, the faster the object is travelling. The closer the dots, the slower the object. If the dots are equally spaced as on Tape 1 below, then the object has constant speed.

Tape 1 - Constant Speed

On Tape 2, the distance between adjacent dots is increasing - that is, the object is accelerating.

Tape 2 - Acceleration

On Tape 3, the distance between adjacent dots is decreasing - that is, the object is decelerating (slowing down).

Tape 3 - Deceleration

2) Result need to be in m/s/s

Time (seconds) Distance (m) between dots Speed = distance / 0.02 Acceleration = (speed2 - speed1) / 0.02
0.02
0.04
0.06
0.08
0.1
0.12
0.14
0.16
0.18
And so on; if needed

Hint ( Not over the Gravity fall can be under)

Find average acceleration:

Could either be done by averaging results in acceleration column above or by using a graph of speed vs time and finding the slope. The graphing approach is the better one!

Discussion: Should include: 1. what happened (outline findings and what they mean. Eg how does result compare to what was expected) 2. what went wrong (errors) 3 what could be improved (eg different equipment etc).

Conclusion: Was your hypothesis supported or not?
